Legend says the witch or wizard who possesses all three Deathly Hallows will become the Master of Death. It was this legend that spurred the movement behind Gellert Grindelwald, the most dangerous wizard of his time and one of the best villains of this year.

Before he was bested by his eventual murderer, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named, Grindelwald was tyrant supreme. He amassed followers and began a “revolution” fueled by his desire for the Deathly Hallows and bloodline purity.

“For the greater good” — Grindelwald’s eventual slogan for his movement — served as justification for the atrocities he and his group committed. Believing Mugglesshould be subjugated and the International Statute of Secrecy abolished, Grindelwald used his charisma to get others to follow his lead.

Like most compelling villains, Grindelwald’s motives aren’t black and white. In fact, he and Albus Dumbledore were even friends once, sharing the same passions and ideals. This tidbit does little to redeem his actions, but it does make watching Grindelwald and Dumbledore’s paths diverge from their common goal of elevating the status of wizards in society all the more heartbreaking.

Grindelwald believed in himself and his movement until the very end, even at the expense of his friendship with Dumbledore. So strong was his conviction that he even refused to divulge the location of the Elder Wand when confronted by Lord Voldemort himself.

That being said, mentions of his actions are few and far between in the original Harry Potter books, with the majority of it coming straight from the biased view of a former friend.

Cut to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them — a cute movie about finding beasts! Or so we thought. Enter Grindelwald, disguised as Percival Graves, ready to ruin the day. When Grindelwald reveals himself, a chilling moment in and of itself, he immediately turns Newt’s story into one fraught with peril and death. For hurting this innocent, animal-loving Hufflepuff, he earns another notch on his evil-accomplishments belt.

With another appearance in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (a whole movie title dedicated to his villainy), Grindelwald has cemented himself as a top baddie — not only in the wizarding world, but in popular culture for decades to come.
