“#fbf (flashback Friday) – On Alcatraz Island when on tour with Hollywood Vampires, went to see Whitey Bulger’s cell that Johnny Depp played brilliantly in the film ‘Black Mass’.”  – wrote Matt Sorum ex-Hollywood Vampires drummer on Instagram.

New never seen and incredible photos of Johnny as Whitey Bulger!

These photos were taken during the long make-up process for the filming of “Black Mass”, between May and July 2014.
This can be considered one of Johnny’s most extreme makeover Johnny has ever done.

> Curiosities:

Johnny wanted to look exactly like Whitey Bulger so he worn prosthesis that were done based from old photographs to even FBI footage. In the movie, there were about 45 forehead pieces that needed to be done for the filming, not including all the earlier tests to find the perfect density of silicone to make Johnny be able to make facial expressions through the pieces. To finish the look, Johnny also wore contacts, to turn his brown eyes in an incandescent light blue, and wore fake teeth to better evoke the Bulger’s rotting incisor.
The final result was so perfect that Johnny was even a little worried about his safety. No one wasn’t sure about how was going to be the people’s reaction as soon they start seeing Whitey Bulger walking again around Boston. Although not being the original Bulger his fame isn’t that good until today, so the risks of confusing somebody’s mind with such well done make-up art could even make some traumatized person try to harm Johnny, like shooting or knifing him as soon as he left the make-up trailer.
Luckily, even with security guards everywhere, people accepted really well Johnny’s performance and image. Some were scared of him, some even got chills thinking that he was some kind of Bulger’s ghost, some almost didn’t see Johnny with no make-up due to the long process of applying the pieces, but in the end everybody praised his performance and everything was filmed safely.

I gotta say these photos are scary AF!

Underneath of one of the most extreme makeover Johnny
has ever done:

Different from “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”, where he had his hair shaved by his friend Hunter S. Thompson, this time, in “Black Mass”, Johnny wore prosthesis to look exactly like Whitey Bulger. The process wasn’t easy: The makeup team had to cover up from Johnny’s cheeks and the bottom of his nose to the middle of his head with a prosthetic piece where every hair had to be plugged one at a time and by hand, including the eyebrows. In the movie, there were about 45 forehead pieces that needed to be done.
Johnny also wore contacts, to turn his brown eyes in an incandescent light blue, and wore fake teeth to better evoke the Bulger mug, rotting incisor. The whole process (protect the skin, use the products to glue the prosthesis, adjust, cut, paint, makeup, hair) used to took 22 hours to be done, and everything had to be redone with new prosthetics in the next day to film a new scene.

Whitey Bulger.

today (September 18), “Black Mass” premiered in the USA. The movie based on the
2001 book “Black Mass: The True Story of an Unholy Alliance Between the FBI and
the Irish Mob” by Dick Lehr and Gerard O’Neill was premiered originally two
weeks earlier in September 4 at Venice Film Festival in Italy. The movie was also
shown at the Telluride Film Festival the next day, and in the Special
Presentation section of the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival. Johnny
and the cast attended both festivals, so as the screening at Coolidge Corner
Theater, in Massachusetts and the BFI London Film Festival, in London. Both movie, and Depp’s performance, received acclaim from most critics, and many
people believed that Johnny really deserved an Academy Award nomination for his
performance as Bulger, but were all surprised when his name was left off the list
of nominees. Some believe it was because Johnny commented that he didn’t want to
win an Oscar if nominated for one. In this movie, Johnny makes one of his most compelling performances in years portraying the

second on the FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, behind Osama bin Laden, the Boston
gangster, Whitey Bulger.

In the 1970s South Boston, FBI Agent
John Connolly persuades Irish mobster James “Whitey” Bulger (Johnny Depp) to
collaborate with the FBI and eliminate a common enemy: the Italian mob. The
drama tells the true story of this unholy alliance, which spiraled out of
control, allowing Whitey to evade law enforcement, consolidate power, and
become one of the most ruthless and powerful gangsters in Boston history.

> Curiosities:

* This is fourth
time that Johnny plays a real-life gangster, after Joseph D. Pistone in “Donnie
Brasco” (1997), George Jung in “Blow” (2001), and John Dillinger in Public
Enemies (2009).

While researching
for the role, Johnny tried multiple times to speak to James “Whitey”
Bulger, which is currently incarcerated for life at the United States
Penitentiary Coleman II in Sumterville, Florida. But Burger didn’t accepted.
Johnny had to use photos and old videos to perform exactly like him. This is one of the most violent roles Johnny has ever done.

In an
interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! (2003), Johnny Depp admitted that he broke his
rule of not watching his own movies with this one. He was at the film’s debut
in Venice. He was about to skip out of watching the film, but Director Scott
Cooper asked him to stay, so he did. Johnny also said that this was his
favorite movie of all he had done.

Johnny picked
up his Boston accent for the film from his friend Joe Perry.

The movie project
was shelved once after Johnny Depp dropped out due to salary issues.

This is the movie with most profanity words Johnny had done. Just the word “f*ck”
is said 254 times throughout the film, most of them, by him.

Johnny was
nominated for the SAG Award for Best Actor and won the Desert Palm Achievement
Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

As usual,
the movie has different titles around the world: In some countries from the Latin

America, the
movie is known as “Pacto Criminal” (Criminal Pact), but in Brazil is named “Aliança do
Crime” (Crime Alliance). In France has another English title: Strictly
Criminal”.  In some countries they kept
the original title and added a new one in their native language

: In Czech
Republic and Portugal they added “Dirty Game”, In Spain “Strictly criminal”, in
Italy “The Last Gangster” and in Romania “Dirty Business”.
